As part of Claire Nash Solicitors’ commitment to ongoing professional development, I recently attended the Wills and Probate Autumn Update 2026 conference at the Sofitel, Gatwick, on Wednesday 21 October, alongside my colleague Nicky Stevens.

Organised by Professional Conferences, the full-day event brought together solicitors and other professionals working across wills, probate, estate administration and elder client law to explore important developments and practical considerations affecting the sector.

The programme covered a range of topics, including will drafting and planning, the forthcoming inheritance tax changes affecting pensions, funding care and the family home, the administration of more complex estates, and the latest autumn updates on tax, trusts and older client law.

Led by Professor Lesley King, John Bunker and Caroline Bielanska, the conference provided six hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), offering a valuable opportunity to refresh our knowledge and consider how developments in legislation and practice may affect our work.

Preparing for the April 2027 pension and inheritance tax changes

One of the key areas of focus was preparation for the pension and inheritance tax changes due to take effect from April 2027. These changes have important practical implications for probate teams, including identifying pension assets, calculating and paying inheritance tax, diarising relevant deadlines, obtaining the necessary HMRC clearance, and reviewing and updating probate procedures.

Preparing for these changes will be an important part of ensuring that our probate processes remain effective and that we are ready to manage the additional considerations involved in administering estates under the new rules.

At Claire Nash Solicitors, we recognise the importance of keeping our knowledge and practices up to date in an area of law that can have a significant impact on individuals and families. Attending events such as this reinforces our commitment to ongoing learning and helps us stay informed about developments that may affect the clients we support.

Looking after our clients’ futures

Keeping up to date with changes in wills, probate, taxation and estate administration is an important part of providing a considered and informed service to our clients. Conferences such as this give us the opportunity to develop our knowledge, share learning with colleagues and review how changes in the law may affect the practical advice and support we provide.

We would like to thank Professional Conferences and the speakers, Professor Lesley King, John Bunker and Caroline Bielanska, for delivering an informative and valuable day.
